Qualcomm has heralded the next-generation of wearable devices, unveiling its new ‘Snapdragon Wear 3100’ chipset overnight. The component claims to extend battery life by up to 12 hours.

Incorporating quad-core A7 processors, the platform supports dedicated dual-display systems, with one variant including a 4G modem.

The chipset pledges to significantly extend smartwatch life, offering a low-intensity display when not in use, reserving juice for other tasks.

Snapdragon 3100 features several efficiency improvements, from sensor processing to MP3 playback.

New Wear OS watches will feature an optimised ‘always on’ display, better resembling traditional watches, with boosted battery life.

Fossil, Louis Vuitton and Montblanc are already developing smartwatches which will feature Snapdragon Wear 3100.

Montblanc’s new Summit 2 will reportedly be among the first to launch.

The platform will come in three configurations; a GPS model (with WiFi and Bluetooth) , standard WiFi and Bluetooth model, and a 4G-enabled model.

Qualcomm General Manager for Voice, Music and Wearables, Anthony Murray, claims its currently shipping over 100 Wear OS by Google smartwatches, with 25 brands using its existing platforms.
