Chinese smartphone maker Oppo has released its first 5G phone in Australia, taking on Samsung’s recently launched Galaxy S10 5G.

The Oppo Reno 5G ($1499) will be available from June 11 through Telstra and JB Hi-Fi, and is currently Australia’s second 5G-capable handset.

The launch follows mounting global backlash against fellow Chinese manufacturer, Huawei, amidst rigid US trade tensions, and allegations of cyber-security risks.

It remains to be seen whether Australian consumers will be quick to embrace the new Oppo Reno 5G, or opt for Samsung’s variant over ‘peace of mind.’

Showcased at a recent Telstra demonstration, the Oppo Reno 5G reportedly returned results of almost 2 Gbps, beating Samsung’s S10 5G.

Customers who pre-order the Oppo Reno 5G will also receive a set of Bose QuietComfort 35 headphones.

Oppo is also selling a cheaper Reno 10x Zoom ($1199) for consumers who aren’t in a rush to adopt 5G.

Both handsets feature a pop-up front facing camera, which seeks to maximise display space and accommodate a front-facing camera.

A similar concept is used by fellow Chinese manufacturer, Xiaomi, on its Mi Mix 3 smartphone.
