Korean tech giant, Samsung, has reportedly inked a deal with Gorilla Glass maker, Corning, for its 2021 [third-iteration] foldable phone range, following rumours of cost cutting initiatives and performance improvements. 

According to Korean news outlet, Digital Daily, Samsung is tipped to unveil its new Galaxy Fold 2 smartphone at its Unpacked event in August this year – a notably larger 7.7-inch sized handset.

Samsung has reportedly etched its own ultra-thin tempered glass supply chain with Corning in the United States to lower the unit cost of its foldable phones.

Further project R&D is required, however, the companies are said to be accelerating progress in order to mount Corning ultra-thin tempered glass on Samsung foldable phones released next year.

The news comes after Corning revealed to GSMarena last year that the company was already developing its own glass suitable for foldable phones.

Functionality is largely dependent on the flexibility and bend of each handset range, which Samsung and Corning likely to work this out together.
