Google and Oracle’s decade-long battle over Android ecosystem code has lead to the US Supreme Court, with billions at stake over the outcome of the landmark copyright case.

Oracle has battled Google for its copyright and fair use over the structure, organisation and sequence of some APIs within the Android ecosystem.

It follows many back and forth legal proceedings, including appeals and hung jury deliberations.

Market commentators assert the Supreme Court’s decision in Google v Oracle could have major ramifications for the broader software industry.

Some of the case stems around whether the sequence and organisation of select Java APIs are covered by Oracle’s copyright claims.

Since the commencement of the long-running case, two judges have passed away and one retired.

The case is poised to notably impact the future of software copyright law within Silicon Valley and the wider industry, potentially jeopardising billions of dollars.
