Samsung has, as promised, unveiled what it bills as an industry-first 200-megapixel mobile camera sensor, as well as a 50-megapixel sensor with advanced autofocus.

The Isocell HP1 uses 0.64μm-sized pixels to achieve a 200-megapixel resolution on a sensor that fits inside a handheld device, and includes ChameleonCell pixel binning technology that can use two-by-two, four-by-four, or full pixel modes to suit lighting and environment.

Samsung’s other new sensor, the Isocell GN5, includes Dual Pixel Pro all-directional autofocusing technology for what the manufacturer boasts as “instantaneous” autofocus, and says leads to sharper images in low-light or bright environments.

According to Duckhyun Chang, executive vice president of sensor business at Samsung Electronics, the new ultrafine pixel technology in these sensors take high-resolution imaging to “the next level”.

“With the Isocell HP1 that is breaking barriers and Isocell GN5 bringing ultrafast auto focus, Samsung will continue to lead the trend for next-generation mobile imaging technologies,” said Chang.

Samsung has not said when the sensors will come to its smartphones.
