One possible option is to separate AMD’s graphics and licensing business from
its server business, which sells processors that power datacentres.

The move has been considered before and rejected but the chipmaker’s new CEO
Lisa Su has put it back on the agenda.

AMD also has an extensive cross-licensing agreement with Intel which both
companies would have to consider carefully before a break-up.

Despite competing with Intel since the 1980s, AMD has failed to make major
inroads against its larger rival, with AMD shares falling 40 percent in the
last 12 months.
