Australian technology and business entrepreneur Bevan Slattery has called on Rod Sims to resign as chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Slattery has co-founded Pipe Networks; set up the highly successful ASX-listed NextDC datacentre builder/operator; and is currently seeking to establish the SubPartners submarine cable linking Perth to Jakarta and Singapore.

In an article in telecommunications newsletter Communications Day, Slattery says that under Sims, the ACCC has shown “absolutely zero understanding as to the catastrophic effect of its decisions regarding the NBN”.

Describing the NBN as the “single largest monopoly currently operating in Australia”, he says it was completely created and reviewed under the ACCC’s watch.

 The result, he claims, is that “by 2020 Australian consumers will have the most expensive broadband service in the developed world”.

He says: “It’s time for the ACCC to accept its culpability and negligence in approving what is a worst-case example of anti-competitive, price-fixed, monopoly infrastructure which in the next five years will deliver the Australian public the most expensive broadband in the developed world … Rod Sims, it’s time for you to go.”
