Gamemaker Electronic Arts has posted a smaller-than-expected fall in quarterly revenue and profit despite lacking any major new videogame release in Q2.

The company, known for its Star Wars and sports game franchises, said revenue including deferred sales of online services slid 1.6 percent to US$682 million (A$897 million) in its latest quarter.

Electronic Arts said the revenue comparison suffered because a year ago it benefited from sales of the mid-March release of Battlefield Hardline, the latest instalment in its megahit Battlefield franchise.

For the current quarter, the company said it expects a loss of 17 cents a share on revenue of about $915 million.
