Two months after the NSW Government rejected plans by Google and others to develop Sydney’s long-disused White Bay power station as a technology-based precinct, a government agency is reportedly in talks with Google as proposed lead tenant for a technology hub on the station site.

In June the Government rejected 13 proposals for the site, including one by Google and Lend Lease, complaining that many plans put too much emphasis on residential units, and some even sought to knock down the historic power station – which needs significant remediation.

Google appears to be increasingly squeezed at its current headquarters near the Sydney Star casino, and would hopefully become the anchor tenant at White Bay with a long lease.

UrbanGrowth NSW chief executive David Pitchford has declined to confirm the talks with Google as ongoing, but told The Australian: “My instructions are to secure an anchor tenant, and I am talking to a range of people and corporations about it.”
