Despite President Trump’s recent U-Turn, America’s House Appropriations Committee has unanimously voted to uphold sanctions imposed against Chinese smartphone maker ZTE.

In a prepared statement, committee members approved an amendment to “prevent a foreign company that is beholden to its government – and that ignores embargoes – from infiltrating the devices and networks that are now indispensable to American life”.

The news follows Telstra’s recent decision to drop ZTE handsets. Despite this, ZTE has reportedly pitched to roll out Telstra’s 5G network.

President Trump’s recent efforts seek to lift a seven-year ban from the US Commerce Department, which forced the Chinese company to shut down “major operating activities”.

In a shock to many, early this week President Trump post a tweet urging the Commerce Department to allow ZTE to “get back into business, fast”.
