The Australian Broadcasting Corporation is reported to be planning to axe as many as 37 jobs in its technology division in order to “achieve efficiencies and enable it to reinvest funds into content creation”.
The planned action is believed to be just the first of a number of axing moves, following the $83.7 million funding cut revealed in last month’s Federal Budget.
That matter wasn’t alluded to in the ABC’s announcement of the technology cutbacks, as it strived to put a positive spin on the cuts.
“Under the proposal, the ABC will double its investment in digital products for audiences, to recognise the shift from broadcast to digital platforms,” it said.
Added chief digital and information officer Helen Clifton: “These are hard decisions, but the right ones to guarantee the ABC remains properly equipped, now and into the future, with so many rapid changes in technology.”
