Afterpay is ending the use of barcodes for in-store payments as it moves to transition customers to its NFC-enabled Afterpay Card.

In an email to customers, the buy-now, pay-later giant said barcode would no longer be available as a payment method from September 30.

Customers will instead use Afterpay’s tap-to-pay Afterpay Card service, which works via Apple Pay and Google Pay; devices without near-field communication (NFC) will not be compatible, though will still be able to make online purchases.

Afterpay advised customers to set up their Afterpay Cards in their Google or Apple digital wallets.

“We will also be updating our Terms of Service in relation to how Afterpay works in-store from 30 September.

“For any Afterpay purchases made in-store using barcode prior to 30 September, you will still be able to make the associated repayments after this date,” the company said.

Several retailers have already stopped accepting Afterpay barcodes, including David Jones and Big W.
