Neuron Mobility, a Singaporean e-scooter start-up, is intent on expanding from Brisbane to operate across the country following a $27 million funding round led by Australian venture fund Square Peg Capital.

Unlike the disastrous failure of previous operators in Australia – which saw many complaints of the hired scooters being dumped in piles across city and metropolitan streets – Neuron said it has worked with local regulators from the outset and in June won a permit from Brisbane City Council to operate 60 per cent of the fleet of scooters.

The company has also embedded technology that means the scooters can be geo-blocked from entering certain areas if it is against a council’s rules. Speed limits can also be programmed to ensure riders cannot hurtle past pedestrians in high-density areas.

Neuron has also secured a licence to operate its e-scooters in Darwin and Auckland from early 2020.
