Apple could be heading into the virtual reality market with a headset with both VR and AR capabilities with an 8K display for each lens.

According to CNET, the headset will be released in 2020 with the project getting the codename: T288.

CNET spoke to a person familiar with Apple’s plans who said the headset would be ‘untethered from a computer or smartphone’.

CNET reports the box would use wireless technology called 60GHz WiGiz with a second-generation version, 802.11ay is set to boost speeds and range making the technology more suited for high-end VR headsets.

It will also use a 5-nanometre processor (iPhone X is powered by a 10-nanometre processor).

This would be Apple’s first ever VR headset and the first ever in the market to combine both VR and AR.

Apple has been using augmented reality for its iPhones and iPads as CEO Tim Cook has always had a soft spot for that technology.

Apple has not made an official comment.
