The California Institute of Technology has won a US$1.1 billion patent case against Apple and Broadcom over the use of Wi-Fi chip technology developed by the institute.

The research university alleged Broadcom Wi-Fi chips, used in hundreds of millions of Apple iPhones. infringed patents relating to data transmission technology.

The fight is not over yet, of course, with Broadcom and Apple saying they will appeal.

Apple said it believed all of the university’s claims against it resulted from it using Broadcom’s chips in its devices, calling itself “merely an indirect downstream party.”

The judge awarded CalTech a cool $837.8 million from Apple and $270.2 million from Broadcom.
