Christmas sales have been attributed as the cause behind the rise of the FitBit app to the number one spot on Apple’s iOS App Store over the Christmas weekend.

The app allows FitBit owners to track all-day activity, workouts, sleep and more in order to create a more complete picture of their overall health.

It’s expected that the bump to the popularity of the free app is due to an influx of new users who received a Fitbit product as a Christmas gift.

As word of the app’s popularity spread, the company’s shares rose 7.4% to $7.83 US. However, in the week since, they’ve dropped back down to $7.31 US.

Regardless, it remains a positive development for the company, who previously cut sales forecasts for the holiday season amid increased competition from smartwatch players like Apple.
