Facebook is heading into the computer chip business with the social media giant designing its own chip to help filter live videos.

According to Bloomberg, Facebook’s chief artificial intelligence scientist Yann LeCun confirmed the company is working on hardware that can find harmful content being shown in live videos and take it down as it happens.

He says using conventional systems to monitor live videos takes a huge amount of computing power. Because of this there is a big push to design energy efficient chips.

Companies like Intel, Samsung and Nvidia are already working on computer chips similar to this.

This follows the news of Facebook developing its own computer chips as a number of outlets spotted job postings for computer chip development such as an ASIC development manager, asking for someone who can “Build and manage an end-to-end SoC/ASIC, firmware and driver development organisation, including all aspects of front-end and back-end standard cell ASIC development.”
