Foxconn’s founder and departing CEO has called on Apple to invest in Taiwan as it looks to move some production to different countries thanks to ongoing trade disputes between China and the US.

Multi-billionaire Terry Gou, who is leaving Foxconn seeking to become Taiwan’s next president, said he believes “it’s possible” Apple will shift its production but didn’t elaborate further, according to Bloomberg.

A member of Gou’s staff later said he was calling for Apple to invest in Taiwan, not move plants from China.

Gou is seeking nomination from Taiwan’s pro-China opposition party to run for president.

Last Friday Foxconn announced the head of its semi-conductor division Young Liu will become the company’s new chairman from July 1, as the company prepares to bid farewell to its founding CEO.

His position will be replaced by the new chairman Liu and a nine-person committee.
