Google has revealed that the name of its upcoming Android operating system will be Android Nougat.

Google had invited suggestions for the latest confectionery-themed title for its operating system, with Nougat next in line after Android Marshmallow.

The name was announced via social media, with Google introducing Nougat, which had previously been known as Android N, via a series of tweets.

Google had released the developer preview of its next-gen operating system in March.

Dave Burke, Google vice president of engineering, advised at the time via a blog post that the release of “a ‘work in progress’ build earlier in development”, would give Google “more time to incorporate developer feedback”.

Developer preview features include multi-window, allowing split-screen modes on phones and tablets, with virtual reality support also on its way.

Android Nougat is slated for release later this year.
