Global analytics firm, IHS Markit, forecasts foldable phone sales to hit 50 million by 2024, despite the fact none have released to market yet, and launch dates remain uncertain.

Chinese telecom giant, Huawei, has revealed it’s delaying its Mate X to later this year, with Samsung’s Galaxy Fold tipped to release internationally next month after unveiling in February.

Both devices have received notable hesitation from consumers online, with the foldable phone market uncharted territory and a new product market.

Samsung pulled back the release of its Galaxy Fold in April, after early reviewers experienced a slew of technical issues.

The Korean company claims it has finished product refinement, with Samsung mobile boss, DJ Koh, admitting the device was launched before it was truly ready.

The Galaxy Fold is tipped to release internationally in September, and like Huawei’s Mate X precise Australian availability is yet to be confirmed.

Some commentators remain wary the technology has not reached maturation, with projected sales remaining uncertain amid intense flagship phone competition and declining replacement demand.

Several other phone makers (e.g. Motorola) have also revealed plans for a foldable phone, with Apple yet to make an official comment on an iPhone variant.
