TAIPEI: Taiwanese chipmaker Mediatek is exploring whether it can circumvent US bans on semiconductor equipment and software and supply Huawei with urgently needed chips.

Mediatek has applied for permission from Washington to keep supplying Huawei with chips in accordance with US rules.

The company apparently believes it can supply the chips free of any American intellectual property covered by the Trump Administration’s latest restrictions.
