Chipmaker MediaTek – a competitor for the better-known Qualcomm – said it expects to increase shipments during the second quarter this year, despite global growth in the segment faltering.

MediaTek forecast that its second-quarter shipments of smartphone and tablet chips will come in a range of 135-145 million units, up from 110 million in Q1.

Still, analysts says MediaTek will need to counter slowing demand after global smartphone shipments fell three percent to 335 million units in the first three months and the company is now looking to China to buoy demand.

While MediaTek is upbeat on Q2, all bets may be off during the second half of this year.
