ASX-listed and Sydney-based Netcomm Wireless – already a major supplier of high-end equipment to NBN Co for its distribution point units (DPUs) that act as an interface between copper and fibre connections – says it has developed a new “world-first” device that will play a key role in the NBN rollout.

It says NBN has placed a “large order” for its new network connection device (NCD), which it says works with the DPUs and will be deployed to households connected by fibre-to-the-curb technology.

The device is said to integrate a Gfast- and VDSL-capable modem along with reverse power feed capability.

Netcomm told the ASX that the initial commitment from NBN Co – which it says is expected to grow over time – will result in revenues of $66 million to NetComm Wireless.

The device incorporates a Gfast and VDSL modem, delivering fibre-like broadband speeds to customers over a short run of copper and an Ethernet connection for Wi-Fi routers, computers and other devices.
