Samsung has confirmed it is developing its own smart speaker to take on the Google Home, Amazon Echo and Apple’s upcoming HomePod.

In an interview with CNBC, Samsung Electronic’s Mobile Communications Business president DJ Koh said that the company could be planning to launch the device “soon”.

“Maybe soon we will announce it. I am already working on it,” Koh told CNBC.

It is currently unclear whether the device will be unveiled quite as soon as the IFA trade show scheduled for next week, or at a later date.

While both Google and Amazon have already established their presence in the smart speaker market, Samsung may be able to get the jump on Apple’s HomePod set for launch in December.

Koh did not confirm whether the smart speaker will use the Bixby voice assistant, which recently launched on the Galaxy S8 and S8+ in Australia and more than 200 other countries and territories.

Bixby will also be featured on the upcoming Galaxy Note 8.
