President Donald Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign is pushing for government control of 5G wireless airwaves.

Trump’s backers say the plan is designed to drive down costs and provide access to rural and under-served parts of the country with faster Internet access.

Under the scheme, a government Internet authority would lease access to private wireless providers. The plan is similar to one proposed last year which suggested the US Government provide its infrastructure to be used by wireless carriers.

The proposal generated a massive backlash from the telecom industry and the White House and FCC chairman Ajit Pai were quick to deny it would happen.
