The United States has reportedly informed Canada it plans to proceed with a formal extradition request for Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, over a breach of US sanctions against Iran.

Reported by the Globe and Mail, the deadline for filing a formal extradition request is January 30.

The news comes after Huawei CFO and Founder’s daughter, Meng Wanzhou, was arrested in Canada on December 1, at the request of the United States.

In mid December, Meng was granted bail in Canada, as Chinese authorities continue to fight extradition.

As previously reported, Meng has continued to maintain innocence, asserting she’ll contest allegations in a trial in the United States.

Meng is facing allegations she misled multinational banks about Huawei’s control of an Iran-based company – a deception which reportedly put banks at risk of violating US sanctions, and severe penalties.

American officials claim the Chinese giant was using the banks to move money out of Iran.

The arrest has continued to strain trade relations between America and China.
