Google’s self-driving car project has finally been given an official name: Waymo. It is now a stand-alone business unit within the Alphabet empire, setting an expectation that the effort will make money.

Waymo’s CEO will be John Krafcik, who has led Alphabet’s driverless-car project for the past year.

Alphabet believes the technology is becoming commercially viable. Waymo expects to generate revenue through ride sharing, transportation logistics and trucking, as well as licensing technology to other carmakers.
