The world’s fourth-largest smartphone maker, China’s Xiaomi, plans to enter the Japanese smartphone market next year, to challenge market leader Apple with high-performance models at lower prices.

Xiaomi will offer several models, along with wearable devices. It hopes to eventually partner with Japanese wireless carriers, which are the main distributors for phones in the country.

Its decision to enter the Japanese market comes at a difficult time for Chinese products, with many Japanese suspicious of companies like Huawei on security grounds.

Analysts say one of the main selling points of Xiaomi phones will be high performance at lower prices than rival brands, especially iPhones.
