Consumers in Japan appear not to be interested in buying a foldable phone, according to a Nikkei Asian Review poll.

Just under 70 percent of those polled on Facebook and Twitter said they would not be interested in buying a foldable phone.

Meanwhile 75 percent said they would not pay more than US$1000 (A$1410) for the industry’s biggest innovation since Apple launched its iPhone in 2007.

It’s not encouraging news for Samsung Electronics and Huawei ,which both released foldable phones that sell for more than $2000 in an attempt to rekindle excitement in the maturing smartphone market.

The poll was conducted within 24 hours after Huawei’s launch of its Mate X foldable, 5G-enabled smartphone. Samsung Electronics launched its Galaxy Fold version last week.
