It’s only been a few short months since Microsoft made its gambit to steal away the all-in-one desktop market with their Surface desktops.

However, word is that Microsoft are preparing to showcase the next chapter in their mainstream-branded range with a major reveal event in the next few months.

According to ZDNet‘s Mary Jo Foley, a Surface product launch event of some sort is on the cards for the coming quarter but the nature of that product is a one big unknown.

Foley cites Digitimes recent report that Microsoft’s next Surface Book “is expected to adopt a clamshell design instead of its traditional 2-in-1 and will feature a starting price lower than that of its predecessors.”

She speculates that “if there really are new Surface-branded clamshell laptops coming this Spring, maybe Microsoft will market them as “Cloud Books” or something along those lines”.

It’s also a possibility – though not one that Foley believes is likely – that the hardware event could show off the rumored foldable Surface smartphone that Microsoft is believed to be working on.

Expect further details to be divulged in the coming months.
