Australian regulator the ACCC is launching an investigation into reports of malfunctioning Thermomix units causing serious burns and claims that victims of the problem were forced to sign confidentiality agreements prior to receiving refunds.

Thursday afternoon saw the regulator confirm it has been investigating Thermomix since March, “in relation to reported safety concerns and reports of confidentiality requirements”.

Earlier in the year, CHOICE released a report compiling 87 complaints from customers who were burned by hot liquid after malfunctions saw the lid of the appliance open when in use.

A spokesman for Thermomix told Fairfax the company was aware of the investigation, saying “The safety, welfare and support of our customers is and always has been our highest priority.”

“We have always fully cooperated with the relevant authorities and will continue to do so.”
