If five cameras on LG’s V40 ThinQ seemed excessive, the Korean company clearly weren’t thinking the same, as LG has filed and was granted a patent for a smartphone with 16 cameras, according to a report from LetsGoDigital.
The camera has always been an important feature on LG smartphones, they were one of the first to introduce a dual camera back in 2011 with the LG Optimus 3D, sparking the trend that now sees multiple camera lenses on the backs of the latest smartphones.

Laid out in a 4×4 curved lens grid, the hexadecimal camera is designed to capture a scene from multiple perspectives in a single shot, enabling 3D videos and allowing users to replace people or objects in a shot after tracing around the object with their finger.

The camera allows the best photo to be selected in a series or amalgamate the best angles into a single image. It also allows objects in the photo to be altered/rotated/manipulated to get the best angle or most flattering look.

Besides the numerous lenses on the back, the front will host a mirror for better selfies, and the patent also states the possibility of adding a second display on the back of the device — however, this isn’t featured in any sketches on the patent.
There’s no indication that LG will ever release such a phone, however, it’s clear from this patent that they are trying to stay ahead of the competition, especially with the release of Samsung Galaxy A9 quad-camera and Nokia’s upcoming five camera phone.
