Apple may have its new “flying saucer” HQ, but Microsoft has decided on more environmentally friendly digs for its employees.

MS staff have literally taken to the trees in new specially-built workspaces on its Redmond, Seattle, campus.

More than three metres above the ground, the treehouses feature charred-wood walls, skylights, Wi-Fi and hidden electrical outlets. Employees can grab a bite at an outdoor extension of the indoor cafeteria.

The treehouses have been described as more “hobbit” than HQ and were designed by celebrity treehouse expert Pete Nelson who fronts a US TV show, Treehouse Masters.

Microsoft claims the treehouses promote greater creativity, more focus – and happiness.
